TheBig-Mac is used for many things such as asking to use the restroom. A picture symbolizing the bathroom is put onto the button and a recording such as, "I need to use the bathroom" would play when the button is pressed. The same could be done to ask for snack, drink of water, video, music or any thing that would motivate the student to make a request. This device can also be used as a home/school communication aid. I had a student that would take the Big-Mac home each day with a short message recorded for his family. At the end of each day my student's 'voice buddy' would come to the class to record a brief message about my non-verbal student's day. The device would go home with him where he would press the button for his mother. The idea is to encourage conversation. B. would press the button and play the message. His mother would then respond as if B. had spoken. She would send the device back to me the next morning with a new message and we would repeat the process in the classroom. Granted sometimes B. was more interested in hearing his mother's voice than what was said, but it gave us a chance to model conversation at school and at home. The Big-Mac can also allow a non-verbal child participate in reading time. A repeated line book such as Green Eggs and Ham works best. The line, "I don't like green eggs and ham" could be recorded on the device and played back by the non-verbal child at the appropriate time.
