Communication

My students are non-verbal and have great difficulty in receptive and expressive communication.  In order to accommodate my student's inability to communicate effectively,  I use visual aids to help me communicate with them and to allow them to communicate with me. My students use a variety of methods to express themselves such as pointing to pictures, gestures, sign language, and their individual communication devices.I have a variety of materials available to my students in the classroom to encourage them to communicate. I also create situations to force them to communicate for example I may move a favorite item to force them to ask for it. I also model communication throughout the day to encourage them to express their wants and needs.

Big-Mac

The Big-Mac is the simplest device I have in my room.  A message up to about 20 seconds is recorded onto the device.  The student presses the big yellow button and the recording is played back.  This may be a simple device, but it has many uses.  More...

Four Choice Device

This is a four choice device that I had in my classroom.  The student would press the picture symbol and a recorded message would play.  This device was set up as a choice device.  More...

VoicePal Pro

The VoicePal Pro was assigned to one of my students.  It can be customized for up to about 10-14 choices.  The student presses the picture and a recording is played. More...

DynaMyte

The DynaMyte is on of the most advanced devices available in our county. The device is much like a small touch-screen computer. When a button is pressed a computer generated voice states the phrase that has been programmed in for that button. Some of the buttons will open a pop-up screen that will offer the student more choices. For example, when the button for the computer is pressed the device will say, "I want to use the computer." A smaller screen will open up and the student can choose what he would like to do on the computer. More...
