This unit works on teaching a matching game similar to "Concentration." A lack of social skills is one of the most common characteristics of autism and often leads people to assume that an autistic individual does not want to interact socially. This is usually a misconception and it is more likely that there is a lack of skills... not desire to interact with others. Social skills must be taught to my students, they do not pick up on them naturally as a typically developing child does. The unit also focuses on communication skills. Communication is an area that autism seems to impact the most. Communication skills are incorporated into every lesson I teach and reinforced constantly throughout the day. This unit is based my student's IEPs (Individual Education Plan) and the NC FACES (Functional Applied Curriculum for Educational Success) curriculum. The unit was also written to fit into the NC Alternate Assessment Portfolio criteria. Due to their disabilities all of my students are assessed by the NCAAP and many of their IEP goals and objectives are based on the NCAAP. This unit falls under the Community Domain and the Sub-Domain of Recreation/Leisure.
UPDATE Due to the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) legislation North Carolina has made changes in the NCAAP. The domains mentioned above no longer exist. Now when using the NCAAP to evaluate a student the objective must be aligned to the NCSCOS math and reading objectives. This lesson plan could be easily be aligned to these objectives.
